The Recovery Process
Anyone who finds an animal identified with an AKC CAR collar tag, microchip, or tattoo should contact AKC CAR immediately, regardless of the time of day. If the animal is enrolled in the AKC CAR recovery system, A Recovery Expert will attempt to call the primary contact immediately. If the primary contact cannot be reached, a Recovery Expert will call an alternate contact, veterinarian or shelter. When a contact person is reached, the Recovery Expert will coordinate with the locator to arrange a reunion between the lost pet and the primary contact. AKC CAR has successfully performed this process over 330,000 times.

Our toll-free number is provided on all AKC CAR issued collar tags. An animal that is not wearing any visible ID (i.e. collar tag, tattoo, etc.) can be scanned at a shelter or participating veterinarian clinic to determine if a microchip is present.
To report a lost or found animal, contact AKC CAR by telephone 1-800-252-7894 (Press 1 to immediately speak to a Recovery Expert). Please have the pet's AKC CAR collar tag, microchip, or tattoo identification number available.
